Awesome South Florida events in January

South Florida is one of the hottest (literally and figuratively) places to be in January.  What better way to celebrate the cooler temperatures of January by getting outdoors to explore, watch and eat delicious food?

Below is a brief list of some of the excellent festivals and events taking place across South Florida this month.

Jan. 15-17 ART DECO WEEKEND. Ocean Drive on Miami Beach.

The 39th Art Deco Weekend will take place in one of the nation’s best art deco communities. Over the weekend, there will be more than 80 events ranging from awesome food vendors, art exhibits, lectures and antique autos.  

Jan. 16-17 BROWARD SHELL SHOW. Emma Lou Olson Civic Center in Pompano Beach.

Beautiful shells from the shores of Broward County and beaches all over the world will be on display and for sale at this annual event. Events will include competitive shell displays, shell arts and crafts and jewelry.


Yachting teams from 12 countries and more than 20 states will compete against more than 100 yachts for class championships. Spectators can book seats on boats and watch the event in the water or can get views from land on the Atlantic side of the island.

Jan. 21-24 FELLSMERE FROG LEG FESTIVAL. 22 South Orange St. in Fellsmere.

80,000 people are expected to attend this year’s 25th annual Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival.

Highlights include: frog’s leg and gator tail dinners, hot legs contests, carnival rides, Red Neck Olympics), a classic trucks and car show, hay bale toss, great live music and more than 100 booths featuring the work of unique craftsmen and artisans

Jan. 30-31 SWAMP BUGGY WINTER CLASSIC. Florida’s Sports Park in Naples.

Looking to get a little dirty with a crowd of people? Head to the world’s muddiest swamp buggy races on a figure-8 track. The buggies range from Jeeps with snorkels to giant monsters with NASCAR racing engines.

Jan. 31 KISS COUNTRY CHILI COOK-OFF. C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines.

The KISS Country Chili Cook Off pairs an amature chili cooking contest with performances by big country music stars. The 2016  line-up includes Little Big Town, Jake Owen, Chris Young, Dan + Shay and Maddie and Tae.
