Calculate your vital costs of living like your home, food, insurance, etc.; once those numbers have been secured, the remainder can be spent on a payment, fuel, and car insurance. Start from this number to get a good idea of where your finances lie.

Establish your transportation needs.

We know. There’s tons of “establishing” that must occur when entering into the car-buying process. But think for a moment about what purpose your vehicle will serve. Will you be commuting hours upon hours on a weekly basis? Will you be the town “taxi” for soccer practice? Or will you be using your vehicle as your work truck for your construction business? Figure out what purpose your vehicle will serve and start your search from there.

Identify and prioritize your wants and needs.

Though it may be difficult, you need to separate the things you absolutely cannot survive without and the things you want. Is it really necessary for you to opt for the fully loaded SUV or will a fuel efficient sedan suffice? Figure out what it is that you need and what you want. Believe it or not, there’s a difference.

Do your research.

Test drives are crucial in the car-buying process.

Absolutely nothing should be more important in your decision process than how you feel while behind the wheel. Be sure to spend more than five minutes in the car to actually get a good feel. A half hour should be perfect.
