How To Have An Organized Ride During A Holiday Road Trip

November 14th, 2022 by

These cooler months often welcome various holiday shenanigans, vacations, and road-tripping excursions. These trips may also invite a big headache for parents, as they deal with their kids, often leaving the car messy or downright gross. Here are a few tips that might be helpful in that department.

Starting Fresh

This may seem useless as you expect your inevitable disaster, but hear us out before giving the kiddos yet another lecture, cleaning out all the junk and clutter before a long road trip might give them some visuals to aim for.

While there’s also a sizable chance that these tiny tots that this talk will quickly go over their heads during their Disneyland venture, it’s usually better to have a strong starting point and find ways to maintain some level of consistency.

Make Your Expectations Clear

If you couldn’t tell by now, kids aren’t mind readers. Seriously disapproving looks without any context behind them won’t cut it. Be clear and firm as you communicate to your kids your expectations regarding the cleanliness of the vehicle, breaking it down for them how you would like them to go about that.

Similarly, keep your expectations low and realistic. While you shouldn’t expect your crew to begin waxing the car, at least set the expectation of putting all of their trash into a designated baggie and ensuring they empty it as soon as they reach a stop.

Designing A Cleanup Kit

It’s not as complex as it sounds; all one needs is a few necessities, such as a small tub of disinfectant wipes, small trash bags, and paper towels. This should be just enough for cleaning up potential spills and messes. Perhaps even incorporating a lint roller for picking up bits of crushed food, or better yet, a small cordless vacuum cleaner.

It’s also wise to carry some extra trash bags and cleaners, mainly if one or multiple children are prone to motion sickness.

Obtain An Organizer

It’s also wise to invest in some organizers for the vehicle, mainly to place in the backseat. Many organizers can easily be dressed over front seats, providing easy access to everything your kids play with, like crayons or toys in their reach. Some even have room for a tablet and earbuds.

Mini Trash Bags and Clean Ups

Consistencies that are small but intentional are often more effective than intense goals. A small project that might be useful in giving your kids a small plastic bag for each day of travel. Their responsibility will be to put their trash in the bag whenever there’s a stop. During these stops, you can gather this junk and toss it in a garbage can nearby. Maybe even use a small vacuum (if needed) and reorganize the area.
