Having a vehicle is like having a second home for many. We spend a lot of time inside our rides and while some might sleep in their car or keep too much inside their vehicle, there are some essential items owners should carry in their vehicle. Particularly in moments when a vehicle is broken down or is having trouble starting is when having the right items will make all the difference. Let’s go over all the important items every vehicle owner should host in their trunk and vehicle.
Car batteries, especially in the South Florida heat, may only have a life of a few years. If any lights were left on overnight, the car battery might run out of power and jumper cables allow for another vehicle to jump-start a vehicle that has a dead battery. Many times, a jump start makes the difference and can give a battery juice to work smoothly for a short to an extended period of time. Many auto repair places, like AutoZone, will test a battery for free to inform a customer if they should replace their battery. Make sure to carry a set of jumper cables at all times.
First Aid Kit
The obvious reason to carry one is to help after the event of an accident for anyone involved. Minor wounds and cuts can be treated as well as pain reliever ready to go. Many countries around the world require drivers to have a first aid kit in their vehicles at all times.
Flare or Hazard Cones
Should any accident or event that causes a vehicle to not be able to move out of the way of traffic, use a flare or hazard cone to inform drivers to slow down and avoid creating another problem. Perfect to use at night or if the vehicle that can’t move is stuck in the middle of the road or even on the shoulder of the road. Warning other drivers is smart and a safe way to help keep traffic moving.
Just like having jumper cables, many drivers carry a spare tire. Spare tires last around five to six years, as rubber does crack and wear down over time, regardless of use. Keep that in mind and make sure to have a spare tire placed in the trunk. A spare is easy to use as it usually comes with the right tools, but if it doesn’t, read below to make switching the broken or ripped tire easy. Do note that some newer cars are not coming with spare tires. Instead, they are coming with pump kits that include a tire sealant.
Jack and Lug Wrench
To ensure that a spare tire can be taken off, having a jack to raise the vehicle and a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts is important. While most vehicles provided a lug nut key to provide access to take off the lug nuts, that won’t be enough to get the job done.
Tire Pressure Gauge
The final tire item that every vehicle owner should carry is the small, but highly useful tire pressure gauge. Keeping the proper air pressure is inside of all tires is critical. Learning when to add air or remove air from a tire is important. Before any long trip, make sure to read the tires and fill any tires that are low with air or remove any tire that has too much. Every vehicle is different and requires the proper amount. On the driver’s side when the driver’s side door is open is a white sticker that lists all the tire information, including the tire pressure needed.
In the rare case that a fire breaks out, there’s usually very little time to waste. Using a fire extinguisher might save a vehicle from becoming a total loss and can help drivers feel more secure in their vehicle should any fire break out while driving, stay calm and get the extinguisher and take care of the fire if it is not extreme.
Just like keeping a flare, a flashlight can help in the event of any vehicle not working. Replacing anything under the hood requires proper light. Illuminate the workspace and get the work done in a faster time by being able to see anything.
