Increasing Your Car’s Fuel Efficiency Pt. 2: Car Parts +Mechanics

February 18th, 2016 by

To continue on to our first post about driving behaviors that can improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, this post focuses on just a couple of the basic car parts that can improve your car’s fuel efficiency. You don’t need to know “everything” about cars to get the most out of yours.

Tire Maintenance

There are two things one can do to ensure their tires are helping them get the maximum fuel efficiency.

  • First, make sure your tires are properly inflated because this can reduce a car’s fuel consumption by up to 3%. Be sure to check your tire pressure at least once a month and fill them up if needed. Additionally, tires lose more pressure when it is cold outside so be sure to keep up with this during the winter.
  • Second, when buying new tires, select the narrowest possible tires for your vehicle that satisfy your driving demands. Narrow tires have less frontal area, thus reducing aerodynamic drag. But definitely don’t buy tires that are smaller than what the manufacturer approves or that come stock on the vehicle.

Routine Tune-Ups and Oil Changes

A properly tuned and oiled engine maximizes your car’s power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. Be sure to get regular oil changes and ask your mechanic to inspect the car’s spark plugs and the air filter. A dirty air filter will reduce fuel economy, or make the engine stall when idling.

Replace the fuel filter when suggested

Since the fuel filter is typically not in a place that is easy to check during an oil change, manufactures have a recommended schedule for changing fuel filters. If a fuel filter is not properly working, the fuel injectors can get damaged because they are sensitive to gunk. Typical fuel filter problems are from the build-up of gunk that fuel filter has prevented from getting into the engine and therefore disrupting the flow of fuel or the filter begins to disintegrate and the debris are able to get through.
