The 2020 Toyota Corolla is everyone’s favorite sedan, and this week, Driver’s Auto Mart is highlighting the compact for its simplicity, reliability, and incredible affordability.

It’s not much of a secret that the market for small cars is becoming…well smaller, as the popularity for SUVs and crossovers is only increasing. Nevertheless, the Corolla still shows that it’s hot stuff with its excellent choice of three powertrains, including a hybrid. It also wows us with its great deal of standard safety features, standard Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, and jaw-dropping looks.

Engine and Drive

The first engine is the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder, which comes standard in L, LE, and XLE trims. It produces a modest 149 horsepower with 126 lb-ft of torque, and it also teams up with a CVT (continuously variable transmission).

The newer 2.0-liter engine, however, has a bit more pep in its step, as it produces 169 horsepower with 151 lb-ft of torque. SE and XSE Corolla’s come equipped with this engine, and the foremost gets the choice of a 6-speed manual or the CVT.

The third motor that is the most adept with saving fuel is the automaker’s electric infusing 1.8-liter. This engine brings in a 53-kW electric machine while pairing up with a CVT, and as a result, it gives out 121 horsepower with 105 lb-ft of torque.

The overall drive is stable, quiet, and comfortable. It’s able to provide a ride that is quite solid, not even skipping a beat when given a little push. Steering is also firm and is a breeze to handle.

Exterior

This 2020 Toyota compact has a contemporary look that stands out with a large trapezoidal mesh grille giving it a necessary layer of spice. Its headlights have piercing LED running lights, that provide a bit of edge to the clean and simple look of the rest of the body.

While cute and classy generally speaks to Corolla’s core audience, SE and XSE models are a bit bolder with their larger, 18-inch wheels and gray accents, as well as its distinctive grille in gray metallic as opposed to black. More exterior elements on these models include a rear spoiler and restyled rocker-panel trim.

Interior and Standard Features

Similar to the body, the interior has a style that is quite minimalistic yet manages to have some refinement. The cabin rocks a 7-inch screen, with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa, but does not have Android Auto. The system is user-friendly and uses traditional buttons. Knobs and tuners can be used to control the volume and climate-control system. However, the instrument cluster adds a modern twist with its digital display.

Materials on the upper surfaces are soft to the touch, then on the SE and XSE, the front bucket seats have been shaped in a way that is more form-fitting and provides more support. A cloth upholstery is standard on L and LE, while XLE uses SoftTex Leatherette. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is also included on SE, XSE and XLE trims.

All models have a great list of standard driver assists, thanks to the brand’s Safety Sense 2.0. These technologies include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert and lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, road-sign assist, and lane-tracing assist that helps to keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

XLE and XSE upgrade a bit with blind-spot monitoring, while SE and XSE enjoy more vanity-centered elements like 18-inch wheels, countered sport seats, and a rear decklid spoiler.

All 2020 Corolla’s encompass power windows and door locks, standard 6-speaker audio with Apple CarPlay compatibility, and one or two USB ports. Additionally, all models get to have automatic climate, with the exception of the base L trim.
