Small Truck Comparison: Nissan Frontier v. Toyota Tacoma
The following review is a small truck comparison of the the 2016 Toyota Tacoma and the 2016 Nissan Frontier. Each truck was compared by pricing, interior, exterior, fuel efficiency and the size of the truck’s bed. When it comes to sticker price, the Nissan Frontier is less expensive than the Toyota Tacoma. The Nissan Frontier starts at just over $18,000 for a manual 5-speed transmission and about $20,000 for an automatic. The Toyota Tacoma is priced slightly higher at $23,300 and only offers an automatic. The Frontier’s double-cab starts at $22,900 and Tacoma’s double-cab begins at $24,130.
The fuel efficiency of the two small pickup trucks is pretty much neck and neck, but the Toyota Tacoma performs slightly better on the highway. In the breakdown, Toyota Tacoma gets 19 MPG city and 24 MPG highway, while the Nissan Frontier gets 19 MPG city and 23 MPG highway.
The Toyota Tacoma has a slightly larger truck bed measuring in at 73.7” and has a more contoured body style. The Nissan Frontier’s truck bed is 73.3” and has a more straightforward body.
With the purchase of an optional package (priced at $1,200) the Nissan Frontier will be equipped with Bluetooth Hands-free phone system, cruise control and a couple other additional features. Tacoma’s included features are significantly more modern and include a USB hookup, a touch screen and a rear backup camera.
The Toyota Tacoma has a 4-cylinder 6-speed automatic standard, while the Nissan Frontier has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that is a 5-speed manual transmission at the $18,000 price and an automatic transmission for $20,000. Though the Frontier’s V4 has 152 horsepower and the Tacoma has 159 horsepower.
Both Nissan and Toyota offer the same manufacturer warranty — 36-month/36,000-mile limited vehicle coverage and a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage.
